I have been thinking about writing a blog about waiting until the last minute but I keep dropping it to the bottom of my list. Ah, procrastination! Why do people do it? I even do it! I eventually get to what needs to be done – albeit late, and sometimes kicking, but I get there.

Here are the top reasons why people procrastinate and how to address the issues:

Fear of Failure or Success:

You’re thinking, why would someone be fearful of success? It seems pretty clear – success is a good thing. Yes, but within that there are big things at stake. With success comes failure. It takes time, perseverance, and in a lot of cases practice to be successful. When you get there, then what? How do you maintain the momentum to keep going? Once you succeed the expectation will be that success is the norm. Take things in steps. You cannot get everything accomplished at once; and it can certainly be overwhelming to think about all of the things that need to be done to be successful. Breaking things into elements makes it easier to manage and not as daunting.

Unpleasant Projects:

How many times have you moved a project to the end of the list because it was something you really didn’t want to do? I am sure too many times to count. I am guilty as charged. Ultimately it has to be done though. Not everything you do is going to be a task that you are looking forward to. Moving it around to different spots will not make it go away. Consider doing something nice for yourself when you complete a project that you are simply dreading. Write down something you would like to do for yourself and put it in a prominent spot. It will serve as a reminder to encourage you to move ahead.

Overwhelming Tasks:

Sometimes don’t you just feel that there is so much to do; and you simply cannot begin to wrap your mind around it all? You make lists – but they never end. Tasks are crossed off and others take their place. It is easy to become overwhelmed, and then simply do nothing at all. This, of course, makes things worse; then you have more things to do and seemingly no end in sight. Consider breaking your list into pieces. You can then manage the different parts. If you simplify things into smaller components, they become easier to understand and handle.

Disorganization:

A long time ago – in my former life when I worked for a big corporation I had a co-worker who made the disorganized look like they were the pictures of Franklin Covey. She had piles – I mean piles of papers, folders, and I don’t know what else around and on her desk. If she lived in a castle, the stuff could have very well formed a moat – no doubt to ensure organization did not creep in. It did not allow her to complete things on time, that much I could tell you. Disorganization breeds poor planning, which leads to an inability to deliver on time. Keep things organized; if this means you need to keep a notebook or containers to manage ‘stuff’ – then do that. Identify a way to allow yourself to maintain order.

Ducking the Easy Win:

This one may sound counterintuitive. Why would you delay completing a task that will be easy for you? The thought process runs like this – I need to do X but I also need to do Y and Z; X is so easy I can wrap it up in five minutes, whereas Y and Z are much harder – so let me focus on Y and Z and then I can do X right at the end of the day and accomplish a whole bunch today. This is great logic except for the fact that you never get to Y or Z and by default X still remains on the list. If you have something easy to do, and it is important, then do it – it will give you a sense of accomplishment and give you much needed momentum.

I have another 5-10 examples, but I will get to them at another time …

source: resume-resource.com

If you’re looking to remove old negative items from your credit report, a Goodwill Letter is what you may need. Using goodwill letters, you can request your creditor or collection agency to remove negative listings purely out of goodwill. For instance, if you’ve made late payments due to hardship but have been a good customer and finally paid off the account, a Goodwill Letter can be effective in removing such negatives from your report. Just check out a sample Goodwill Letter as given below.

Dear Creditor,
Re: Account Number__________
I am writing this letter in order to request your help and understanding. Back in [year when the negative item was listed], I lost my job and made a couple of late payments, even though I hated paying late. I do feel bad about it even now. However, I did get current on the account (listed above) as soon as my financial standing improved. I have in fact made timely payments since then. I’ve been working hard to make financially responsible decisions and get better control of my money.

I am now buying a home but having difficulty in receiving an affordable mortgage rate due to the negative listing on my credit report. Thereby, I would request you to kindly remove this negative item as a gesture of goodwill. Your kind gesture would be sincerely appreciated.
Yours truly,

However, I have already communicated with some of my creditors requesting them to accept a reduced payment of $________ in place of my regular payments of $__________. I can assure you that I shall not add to any new debt until and unless my financial situation gets better.

I hereby notify that I shall update you about my financial situation at regular intervals and continue to make normal payments as soon as the situation gets better.

Dear Creditor,

Re: Account Number__________
This letter is a written request for a temporary change in the repayment terms of my debt account. I am currently going through financial crisis and may not be able to follow the current payment plan. Neither do I plan to file a bankruptcy nor do I intend to default on this debt.

I do have some income from [mention income sources]. However, when I examined my financial situation and planned a budget, it became necessary for me to request each of my creditors to accept a reduced/alternative payment plan for a number of months (specify the number, if possible).

I would appreciate your co-operation in making this payment plan effective shortly. I request you to accept a monthly payment of $____________ instead of the regular payments of $____________ made on the [date] of each month. I hereby assure you that I shall not add to my debt till my financial situation improves.

I shall begin making regular monthly payments as soon as I recover from this financial crisis. I hope you will understand my situation and co-operate with me. I shall surely notify you of any change in my financial situation.

Your co-operation during this difficult time is highly appreciated.

Yours sincerely,

How to write a letter explaining your impending mortgage forclosure when applying for loan restructuring.

The Hardship Letter is a document that must be created in your own words. Basically you want to get across to the bank that you did experience a hardship but are looking to resolve the situation with their help. I would also include if you saved any money that you are willing to put that towards a good faith deposit. Also include the new mortgage payment you can afford. Note: DO NOT CUT AND PASTE THIS LETTER. It is an example only, and must be in YOUR WORDS.

The basic premise of this letter is:

The situation you were in which caused you to pay late/not pay was beyond your control

You have vowed to never let it happen again

Here are the things you have done to make sure it doesn’t happen.

You’ve saved $XX amount of money to make a good faith payment

You think you could afford a payment of $XX.XX

This letter is part of our do it yourself loan restructuring/modification program.

To Whom it May Concern:

I am writing this letter to explain why I am currently facing foreclosure on my mortgage to you.

I am very distressed that this has ever happened to me, but I was <laid off>, <seriously injured>, <going through a death in family> . The circumstances drained my carefully put aside savings and in order to provide for my family I was forced to choose between mortgages payments and food. My financial advisor told me not to tap into my 401K.

This is a very embarrassing to me, I have always prided myself in paying on time, and I have taken steps to put away money in my savings account to guard against other unforeseen occurences like this. I guess I just did not put away enough. As a good faith payment, I would be willing to do a partial districution from my 401K towards the loan restructuring. Staying in my home is very important to myself and my family.

My wife and I have sat down togehter to review our finances and believe we could safely accomodate a payment of $1875/month over 30 years should you approve our loan restructuring.

Sincerely,

Please follow the instructions on using this letter or you can do more damage to yourself.

<Your Name>
<my address>

<your credit card company name>
<Company address>

<Date>

Re: Acct #XXX-XXX-XXXXXXX

To Whom It May Concern:

I recently pulled my credit report from Experian and TransUnion and to my amazement, saw that you recently have decided to report me 30 days late on this account in Nov 2007. I immediately disputed this information with Experian and TransUnion and the results of the investigation came back “verified”. Not only was I never late on this account, but according to the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), as the information furnisher, you are required to notify me of the insertion of negative listings.

Since I have disputed the lates with the credit bureaus, and you obviously “verified” them, I am very curious as to what kinds of “records” you may have for this alleged account. Under the FCRA, you are required to conduct an investigation on this account if I request it. I therefore am submitting my written request to you to conduct an investigation. Per the FCRA, you have 30 days to conduct this investigation and respond to my request. If you do not respond within this time periord, per the FCRA, you must remove this negative information.

Sincerely,
<Your name>

How to write a letter explaining your mortgage and/or other lates when applying for credit.

OK, so you have gotten your credit report in the best shape possible and you are trying for that new home. BUT, your credit still has some dings. Even though you may qualify, the lender will ALWAYS ask you to explain any lates on your report. This letter will not help a desperate credit situation, but may make a difference in a marginal one.

The basic premise of this letter is:

The situation you were in which caused you to pay late was beyond your control

You have vowed to never let it happen again

Here are the things you have done to make sure it doesn’t happen.

To Whom it May Concern:

I am writing this letter to explain my late payments on my mortgage to XYZ mortgage company and to American Impressed in Jan 2000.

I am very distressed that this has ever happened to me, but I was <laid off>, <seriously injured>, <going through a death in family> . The circumstances drained my carefully put aside savings and I was forced to miss a payment because of it. My financial advisor told me not to tap into my 401K, and I was able to recover from this crisis and begin making on-time payments.

I have always prided myself in paying on time, and I have taken steps to put away more money in my savings account to guard against other unforeseen occurences like this.

Sincerely,

your signature
